Summer internship opportunities at Scripps College

This year marks the eighteenth consecutive year of paid summer internships, made possible by Michael and Jane Wilson (’64) and the Getty Foundation.

In addition to organizing exhibitions and caring for the collection, the Wilson and Getty interns will explore different career possibilities in the arts. They will participate in field trips to various Los Angeles art institutions and meet with curators, critics, and conservators.

Wilson Internships
June 7 – August 13, 2010

Through the generosity of Jane Hurley Wilson (’64) and Michael Wilson, the Gallery offers TWO paid, full-time, ten-week summer internships to Scripps College undergraduates interested in pursing a career in museums/arts administration or art conservation.

Requirements
must be a currently enrolled undergraduate at Scripps College and have completed at least one semester of college by June 2010
may be a graduating senior in June 2010
Stipend
$3,500 for 10 weeks
This is gross salary; taxes will be taken out. Interns are subject to Scripps’ hiring and payroll procedures.

Description
One intern will work with Director Mary MacNaughton to produce the catalog for the forthcoming 67th Ceramic Annual exhibition. In addition, she will assist with research for the preparation of future grants and management of the Gallery through office work, bill paying, and advertising for exhibitions.

The second intern will focus on a variety of conservation projects related to the permanent collection. The intern will work both at the Williamson Gallery and with a conservator in Los Angeles. Transportation details will be worked out between the intern and the gallery.

Getty Multicultural Internships
June 7 – August 13, 2010

Through the generosity of the Getty Grant Program, the Gallery will be offering THREE paid, full-time, 10-week summer multicultural internships. These internships are “intended for members of groups underrepresented in the professions related to museums and the visual arts, particularly individuals of African American, Asian, Latino-Hispanic, and Pacific Islander descent.”

Requirements
currently enrolled undergraduate student and have completed at least one semester of college by June 2010
not graduate before December 2010
be a resident of or attend college in Los Angeles County
Students who have already served as Getty interns at Scripps are not eligible.

Stipend

Description
The COLLECTIONS/CONSERVATION INTERN will work with the data specialist and director on various projects, including conservation of sculptural reliefs by John Gregory of scenes from Shakespeare’s plays, as well as receiving training on the cleaning and organizing of Asian textiles.

The CURATORIAL INTERN will work with gallery staff to organize an exhibition on silverpoint, scheduled for Fall 2010. Tasks will include researching the work to be displayed and writing wall text; the wall text will also be added to the gallery website.

The VISUAL RESOURCES INTERN will work with John Trendler in the the visual resource library, assisting in the conversion of slides to digital images used in teaching art, art history, and the humanities.
